425 HP VW Corrado 

Somewhere over the hill I can hear the dragon breathing. I don’t believe in dragons so it is clear for me that it is human’s creation breathing. Oh man this is a car! And it’s even not a Skyline … it’s Volkswagen! I can see VW Corrado profile, but there are only few original things left on this monster.

This car has a very long story – says Corrado owner Jezij. Tuning process took many years. You may think that buying styling body kit and new already prepared engine is much more easy, but Jezij had much more requirements for his “baby” then tuning company’s could offer.

Outside look can make illusion about the car. We can see many cars with exiting body styling, but if we pop the hood we see another stock engine. Guys owning such cars never press their pedal to the metal, because heavy plastic parts and massive in car entertainment slows stock car to very low acceleration limits.

Under chess flagged Corrado’s hood 2 liter engine is hiding between supercharger and turbocharger. Oh yes – it has Mercedes Benz SLK supercharger and big KKK 29/27 hybrid turbocharger. This combination is quite difficult to produce, but then it works perfect it boosts car at all revs and in all situations. Under low rpm compressor pumps air into the engine while at higher revs KKK turbo takes the lead and boost air flow to very high 2 bar pressure. Dragon breathing sound comes out from twin ForgeMotorsport blow off valves. Even on neutral gear then accelerator is pressed compressor boosts up pressure and then pedal is realized loud “PPpppssssshhhhhhHHHH “ sound comes out of the box.

Stock 2 liter VW engine had no chances to withstand 2 bar boost – so engine was completely rebuild. Stock engine pistons and rods were replaced with forged aluminum parts. Crankshaft, rods and pistons were balanced for precise work. New exhaust and intake manifolds were made for this car. All exhaust system was also replaced. Custom made 76 mm diameter stainless steel exhaust gives good gas flow without any restriction. In order to decrease heat under the hood exhaust manifold and waste gate were wrapped with special thermal tape.

All the hardware has very clever brain – “HALTEC”. This stand alone system gives all needed freedom for tuner to make fastest car. On last dyno session Corrado showed 425 HP @ 7000 rpm and 474 Nm torque. All this power is transferred through “Sachs” metal ceramic racing clutch to all 4 wheels! Yes this car is 4WD! The transmission was taken from VW Syncro. Of course this trany was calculated to a little smaller power outputs and now it is the main head ache.

Corrado weights about 1200 kilos, but owner is looking for more heavy parts to throw out and lighten car to around 1100 kg. Feature plans include bigger turbo and new bigger injectors. This VW will try to hit 450 HP line and go to very low 11 second 1/4 mile runs.
