 BMW 535 Turbo

BMW 525 TurboIt could be one of several stories about modified BMWs, but it’s different. Many people say that BMW is very beautiful car but it’s not borne for serious performance. From one point of view they are right, because the majority of BMW cars are good for spinning wheels and burning tires only. Cars like this one can radically change this opinion.

1988 year BMW 525 model had classic standard body and almost dead 2.5 liter engine so the owner decided to make investment … buying new house? New car? NO! tuning old ugly BMW 5. All tuning project was really big challenge for tuners and headache for the owner, but then the projected job was finished the result was very good.

Four dour sedan after many months of hard work at styling company became real “street gangster”. This BMW now belongs to a category of extremely tuned cars (only few original parts left). Aggressive look was matched with functionality and performance. The only heavy part on this body is huge rear wing. All styling parts were custom made from fiberglass and are acceptably light.

The heart of this monster is 3.5 liter turbocharged BMW engine which was completely rebuild and slightly modified. Aluminum (not forged) pistons were custom made in local workshop. Special piston design eliminates need for expensive forged pistons. Metal gasket and strong head bolts ends list of main engine hardware mods. Standard camshafts and very big KKK 29/27 hybrid turbo made unique amount of torque. Boosting 0.9 bar 3.5 liter engine produces over 700 Nm low end torque (at 3500 rpm) and 340 BHP.

Engines hardware is controlled by very intelligent Australian engine management system – Autronic. Mapping high torque engine on a chassis dyno was big deal, because of tire slip. Also this wise EMS controls wet nitrous system. Adding only 70 HP nitrous is good for turbo lag elimination and it’s not so destructive to engine components. It is always possible to increase nitrous jets and add extra power.

Only very strong BMW Alpina transmission and 100% locked rear differential can handle massive low rpm torque. But this couldn’t be said about tire grip. There is no problem on the drag strip, because Mickey Thompson Drag tires are made for high power dragsters, but this car is street legal and the owner loves driving it around the city on regular tires.

Being very powerful and very fast this car is great example of what you can create from your old ugly car.
